The Model WTO Costa Rica is a simulation of the negotiations at the WTO happening in San Jose, Costa Rica from the 15th until the 19th of December 2019. The Model shall serve as a platform to exchange ideas about the most relevant topics of International Trade. With this year’s topic: the WTO and SMEs, negotiations on the WTOs role in promoting SMEs within the international trade framework will be discussed from a legal, economic and political perspective. 

Goals

  • Develop the first International simulation of WTO negotiations in Latin America

  • Offer undergraduate and graduate students of all universities, the opportunity to be part of an international event where they can debate on important international trade topics

  • Develop a resolution which can later be assessed by the Costa Rican Delegation to the WTO, as a source of fresh approaches from the younger generation

  • Generate ideas and new solutions to issues regarding the participation of SMEs in international trade. These could later be used by the Costa Rican Government as a basis for reform

  • Provide the delegates, chairs and speakers with a networking platform for future cooperation

Structure of the Model WTO 2019:

Negotiations: 

The negotiation model consists on 6 committees, represented by 10 delegates. This representation has to defend their interests in the agreements made according to their needs.

Each committee will be moderated by 2 chairpersons, that have as their objective to make each committee come to a specific and complete agreement in their correspondent topic.

There will be a total of 72 negotiation participants with a high critical thinking and WTO multilateral system knowledge capabilities.

Conferences: 

Conferences given by highly prepared speakers, about international commerce, entrepreneurship, and soft skills. Also, there will be conferences about challenges SMEs face when they pursue global relations.

These conferences will be open to the all students, professors, executives or any other person interested in the previous topics.
